Lesson 3 of 5

When and how to ask for a raise

Prepare, pick the right time and ask politely with facts.

3 min +10 points

Pick the right time

Good times are after you have worked well for 6 to 12 months, after you learn a new skill, or when you take on more work. Bad times are when the business is in trouble or your boss is busy and stressed.

Prepare your facts

  • How long you have worked there.
  • New skills you learned and extra work you do now.
  • What others earn for similar work in your city. IndicJobs salaries help you check.

Ask politely

Ask for a few minutes in private: "Sir, I have worked here for one year. I now also handle the tandoor and train new helpers. Can we talk about my salary?" Then listen.

If the answer is no

Ask what you need to do to get a raise, and when to talk again. If pay stays far below the market for a long time, it may be time to look for a better job.
