Lesson 2 of 3

Stopping infections: hands, gloves and masks

Simple steps that protect patients and you.

3 min +10 points

Clean hands

Wash hands or use hand rub before and after touching every patient, after touching their surroundings, and after removing gloves.

Gloves and masks

  • Wear gloves for blood, body fluids and cleaning.
  • Change gloves between patients. Never wash and reuse them.
  • Wear a mask when told, covering nose and mouth.

Waste

Hospitals sort waste by colour-coded bins. Learn which bin is for what, and never put needles in normal bins.

If you get a needle prick

Wash with soap and water, don't squeeze, and report to the nurse in charge at once.
