Lesson 1 of 4

Understanding your salary slip

What each part of your pay means, and what to check every month.

3 min +10 points

Ask for a salary slip

A salary slip shows how your pay is worked out. Ask for one every month, even on WhatsApp or paper. It helps you check your pay, get a loan, or prove your income.

Money you earn

  • Basic pay: the main part of your salary.
  • Allowances: extra money, for example for house rent, travel or food.
  • Overtime: extra pay for hours beyond your normal shift.

Money taken out

  • PF: your share goes into your Provident Fund savings; your employer also adds money.
  • ESI: a small amount for health insurance, for eligible workers.
  • Advance or loan repayments, if you took any.

Check every month

Count your days and overtime. Check that the money in your bank matches the "net pay" on the slip. If something is wrong, ask politely the same week.
