Lesson 4 of 4

Saving money and sending it home safely

Simple habits that protect your hard-earned money.

3 min +10 points

Keep money in a bank

A bank account is safer than cash. If you don't have one, you can open a basic savings account under the government's Jan Dhan scheme at most banks, with low or no minimum balance.

Save first, spend later

On salary day, move a fixed amount to savings first, even ₹500. A recurring deposit (RD) at your bank saves a fixed amount every month automatically.

Build an emergency fund

Try to save enough for one to three months of expenses for illness or job loss. Then you won't need loans at high interest.

Sending money home

Use UPI or bank transfer to your family's bank account. Check the name before sending. Keep the payment receipt.

Avoid traps

  • Schemes that promise to double your money fast.
  • Unregistered chit funds and lenders who charge very high interest.
  • Lending your bank account or SIM to anyone.
