Lesson 1 of 5

Talking to an employer on the phone

How to answer the first call well, even if you are nervous.

3 min +10 points

Answer well

When an unknown number calls after you apply, answer clearly: "Hello, Ravi speaking." If you are in a noisy place, say "One minute please" and move somewhere quiet.

Listen first

Let the employer talk. Don't cut them off. If you didn't understand, say "Sorry, could you please repeat that?" This is polite, not a weakness.

Answer short and clear

  • Say your work and experience in one or two lines.
  • Say where you live and how far the job is.
  • If they ask about salary, give a fair range.

End the call well

Before you hang up, make sure you know the date, time, address and person to meet. Repeat it back: "So, tomorrow 10 am at MG Road, ask for Mr Rao." Then say thank you.
